As our guest, you and your horse will experience what itís like to herd cows across mountain streams and through thick forests of Incense Cedar and Sugar Pine, a bonding experience that you and your steed will remember for a lifetime.

The setting is an authentic 100-year-old cow camp, which has remained unchanged since the late 1800ís. It is the perfect place to learn how to track cattle in the mountains, gather them into a herd and drive the cattle to the next meadow. Once back at camp, an individual pipe pen and alfalfa or oat hay will be provided for your horse. Then, sit back and enjoy hearty home cooked meals prepared on a BBQ and in Dutch ovens. After dinner, guests enjoy cowboy poetry, songs and camaraderie around the evening campfire before retiring to a beautiful nights sleep under the stars.

There is individual instruction on the fundamentals of sorting and cutting. Even if your horse has never been around cattle, you will have the opportunity to ride your horse into a group of 20-30 cows, and bring one out. As Sherry Knapp explains it, "A lot of people donít have access to cattle, many of the riders that come to our event have never been able to see how their horses react to cows. In fact, most of our guests are riding Quarter Horses and Paints with working cow horse bloodlines, and this is the first exposure their horse has to cattle in a herd situation."

In addition to the cattle herding activities, each guest will enjoy beautiful trail rides at elevations above 5000 feet. One of the most memorable is a morning ride to NelderGrove, a stand of 2000-year-old Giant Sequoia that are among the most impressive trees on the planet.

No previous cow experience necessary, just a good handle on your horse. For instance, riders must be able to demonstrate that they can jog, lope, mount and dismount unaided. All participants for the Cowboy Bucket List must be 16 years of age. All you need to bring is your horse, bedroll and personal items as well as tack and cowboy gear. The total cost is $650 per person with a $100 discount if the horse you bring was purchased from the Lazy K and its packing our iron. The size of the group is kept to 8 or 9 guests per event, so the atmosphere is very personal therefore space is extremely limited.
